Youth Radio for peacebuilding -- a guide
RFPA guidebook: Youth Radio for peacebuilding
"Youth Radio for peacebuilding -- a guide" (2nd edition)

Youth radio is a tool with tremendous power to build peace. Just as youth are deeply involved in conflict, so too they have the possibility to play a role in building peace.

Radio has the potential to harness the creativity of young people.

This guidebook has been written with such young people in mind. It is designed to help them and those who work with them design and produce entertaining radio programmes which help construct a peaceful future.

You can download it in English and French from our Guidebook section: http://www.radiopeaceafrica.org/index.cfm?lang=en&context_id=3&context=manuals

Sierra Leone Media Sector Mapping 2005 - Key Findings
The report can be found in the 'Library' at http://www.radiopeaceafrica.org/index.cfm?lang=en&context_id=5&context=library. In 2005 SFCG carried out a mapping of the media sector in Sierra Leone - examining information channels related to two dominant policy frameworks: the Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS) and Decentralisation.
The objective was to understand better the effect of the policy frameworks in everyday life. Three key questions were asked:
• How is information made available?
• What information does the public receive and how is it understood?
• What quality and quantity of information is required to ensure the full participation and engagement of the public?

Generally the study found that vertical information flows are well developed whereas horizontal information flows are not.

Mahad Ahmed Elmi
HornAfrik peace journalist murdered
Mahad Elmi, who was murdered in Mogadishu on 11 August 2007, was one of the 21 talkshow producers from across Africa who came together in Burundi in 2005 to contribute to the development of the 'Radio Talkshows for Peacebuilding' guidebook - which was produced by the Radio for Peacebuilding, Africa project. His contribution was unique and powerful, and his strong voice for peace in his own country is undoubtedly the reason for his murder. He will be missed, but if the murderers believe that his voice will be silenced they are wrong.

- Youth Radio for peacebuilding – a guide (2nd edition)

- Soap opera for Peacebuilding, part 2 is also now downloadable in a pdf version.

Radio Competition 2006
Radio for Peacebuilding, Africa Awards Winners
The Radio for Peacebuilding, Africa team is happy to inform you that the judges have made their decision and selected the winners for the RFPA Awards 2006. We would like to thank and congratulate the large number of individual radio broadcasters and radio stations which participated.

Awards have been made in three categories (Talkshow, Drama and Youth Radio). The competition recognises the best programmes that contribute to peace. Programmes that reduce tensions in groups and communities, which enhance and value shared interests, that break down listener stereotypes, and that provide positive role models.

In general, the judges were impressed by the quality of many of the programmes which were entered for the competition. Choosing the best programmes sometimes proved to be really hard. For instance, in the Youth Radio section, the judges couldn’t decide between two programmes, and eventually decided to award the first prize to both of them. On the other hand, in the Talk-show category the judges decided to award only two runner-up prizes as they didn’t feel that the others were of a high enough standard.
